Shin-ichi Nakao graduated in 1976 from the University of Tokyo, Chemical Engineering Department. He received his Ph. D. on membrane science and technology at the same university and started to work there, becoming Professor in 1995. From 1982 to 1984, he stayed at Prof. Smolders’ group at Twente University of Technology in the Netherlands as postdoc. In 2009 he moved to Kogakuin University and he became Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo in 2011. He is also working at the Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth(RITE) as Chief Researcher and Group Leader of Chemical Research Group from 2012.
He was the president of the Membrane Society Japan, the Society of Sea Water Science, Japan, the Aseanian Membrane Society, and the Chemical Engineering Society Japan. He is now vice president of the Japan Federation of Engineering Societies and Japan Union of Chemical Science and Technology.
Shin-ichi Nakao has worked on membrane science and technology for 40 years, and he has many publications on membrane technologies. His current interests are transport phenomena on RO, NF, UF and MF, water treatment with membranes especially MBR, synthesis of silica membranes for H2 permeation by CVD and membrane reactors.
